Potentially Unwanted Program. Any application which is installed without the user's knowledge or consent, which the user does not or would not want.

PUP would include applications which are pre-installed on a computer when it is first delivered. These may be wanted by some individuals but unwanted by others.

PUP is commonly is used to include any form of malware (spyware, adware, viruses) etc.
