.srt file extension

.srt
Subtitles file.

A subtitles file (.srt) contains text subtitles to be shown with a video clip. There should normally be another file of the same name but with the file extension of .avi, this is the video file for which the subtitles apply. The .srt file does not contain any video.

Windows Media Player will play subtitles (.srt files) when playing the video file (.avi), although this configuration option may need to be enabled. Other .avi players may also play .srt files.

Some .srt files may be named to reflect the language they contain. For example movie.eng.srt for English, or movie.spa.srt for Spanish. A suitable player should then allow you to switch between subtitle languages.

A .srt file is also known as a SubRip file.
