.cmd file extension

.cmd
Windows-DOS command file.

A .cmd file is a scripting file. A .cmd file provides extra scripting commands over .bat files.

.cmd files were introduced with Windows 2000 and are in many ways a successor to the older .bat files. Unlike .bat files, .cmd files are not recognised on Windows 9x or any earlier version of Windows. .cmd files are run using the 32-bit cmd.exe command processor, whereas .bat files are run using the older 16-bit command.com command processor.
