Managed Newsgroup Archive
Frequently Asked Questions

What is meant by calling this a managed newsgroup?

This newsgroup archive is described as a managed newsgroup archive for two reasons:

  1. because it is not a simple dump of all archive posts but has various filters applied to what is archived and presented. These filters are to screen out newsgroup postings which are less likely to be of interest.
  2. it provides added information relevant to postings to help understand those postings - for more information see What added value does this newsgroup archive provide?.

Can I get one of my posts removed?

If you have made a post to a newsgroup and it has been archived here and you wish to have it removed, then send an e-mail to newsmanager@cryer.co.uk, from the same account as originally used to make the posting, with a polite request for the posting to be removed. Please include the full url to the page containing the post. If the original account is no longer available to you or if the e-mail address was munged then you will need to provide a clear means to identify yourself as the original author. Please be aware that all e-mails should be polite as our e-mail filter will not pass through emails containing bad language.

Be aware that newsgroups are a public forum and that there are numerous different newsgroup archives. If your posting is archived here then it will also be archived on many other servers on other sites that have no affiliation to this site.

There is something offensive in a post, can it be removed?

If there is something that you find offensive in a posting then e-mail newsmanager@cryer.co.uk explaining why you find a posting offensive. All reports will be looked into, and this may result in postings being removed.

Back to FAQ

How can I reply to a posting?

This archive is intended to provide a historical record of newsgroup postings. Therefore no provision has been made to enable you to reply to postings. If a posting is recent then it is suggested that you visit the newsgroup using your newsgroup reader and post a reply using your newsgroup reader.

I don't want my posts archived, can I prevent my posts from being archived?

To prevent a post from ever appearing in this archive, include the text "X-No-Archive" in the header of the post. Alternately, include X-No-Archive in the first line of the message and it will not then be archived.

There are only a small selection of newsgroups here, what about the rest?

While this service is being evaluated the number of newsgroups is being kept deliberately small. Should this initial pilot scheme prove successful then the intention is to expand the number of newsgroups included.

Back to FAQ

There is a newsgroup I'm particularly interested in, can it be included?

If there is a newsgroup that you are particularly interested in and would like to see included then please e-mail details to newsmanager@cryer.co.uk. During the initial pilot scheme it is unlikely that the number of newsgroups will be extended, but should the pilot prove successful then any suggestions will be given priority.

What added value does this newsgroup archive provide?

Firstly, this service is intended as an archive. You can get up to date postings from a newsgroup using a newsgroup reader, and a newsgroup reader will also enable you to participate in newsgroup discussions. The role of this archive is to enable you to view newsgroup discussions long after they have disappeared from the original newsgroup server - newsgroup servers tend to drop old postings after a while.

There are a number of newsgroup archives available on the internet. What distinguishes this newsgroup archive from others is the added value (or information) provided with each post.

Together with each posting a number of helpful information links will be provided. These information links include, but is not limited to:
