2. Volume Shadow-copy Service, also known as volume shadow copy. VSS takes a snapshot copy of a shared folder in order to make the shared folder available off-line (i.e. when the network connection to the shared folder is not available) or to provide a consistent view (such as during backups). VSS also records changes made to those files.
