QR code example A QR code is a square two dimensional bar-code. It is named "Quick Response" because it is designed so that it can be read quickly.

QR codes are becoming popular as a way of sharing a link to a webpage. This is because many smart phones are able to scan a QR code - QR code readers are available for download for all popular smart phones. Typically the code is scanned and the link opened automatically or the option given to open the link - depending on the scanner used. Both smartphone readers/scanners and software to generate QR codes are widely available for free, which is probably a factor in helping make them popular.
