Choropleth

Choropleth
A way of presenting a map, providing a visually intuitive way to convey quantitive or qualative information by marking each region (i.e. area on the map) with uniform colour, shading or other markings. This allows different regions on the map to be visually compared and contrasted.

Thematic maps (which just use colour and/or shading) are types of choropleth maps.
