.vcf file extension

.vcf
Virtual Business Card (vCard) file.

A .vcf file is a virtual business card, also known as a vCard. It is typically seen as an attachment to e-mails. It is also commonly used as an export/import format for passing contact details from one system or application to another.

The file typically has a field for:

  • Name
  • Full Name
  • Title
  • Organization
  • Telephone (work, home)
  • Address of work
  • Label-making information
  • Email preference
  • Internet (web page)
  • Revision
  • an END marker.

There are many programs that can read or write a .vcf file. It can also be read with a text editor. Most commonly, a vcf file is part of an email, sent as an attachment.

The file type .vcf is used by Microsoft Outlook to create a Virtual Business Card. Outlook can also be used to import the contact information, thereby adding a new Outlook contact.

An Android phone will also export contact details to a .vcf file on the SD card. It can also import these (Contacts → Menu → Import/Export).
