.url file extension

.url

Internet shortcut file. This is a shortcut to a URL, typically a web page. Opening this (with the likes of Internet Explorer) will open the website that the shortcut points to. The file itself is a classic ".ini" style file, and can be edited with a text editor.

The very simples .url file, if opened using notepad, contains something like:
