.sit

Compressed (Macintosh) StuffIt Archive. This is a compressed file format.

StuffIt is a proprietary algorithm. It was originally available for Mac only, where it became quite popular. It is now also available for Windows and Linux platforms.

Be aware that files compressed on a Mac may contain characters in the file names which are illegal on Windows, and that this can prevent some .sit files from being decompressed on Windows.
