1. MapServer database index file.

2. dBase index file. Each .mdx file will normally be paired with a .dbf file with the same name (but it does not follow that all .dbf flies will have an acompanying .mdx file.)

A .mdx file may be referred to as a "multiple index file".

.mdx files were first used by dBase IV, and replaced the use of .ndx files used in earlier versions of the database. .mdx files are maintained and updated automatically by dBase (whereas the older .ndx files had to be manually maintained by issuing a REINDEX command.)
