.log file extension

.log
Generic application log file.

Log files are typically either text or binary. A text log file is typically a human readable log of events or actions, possibly with time or date information. Binary log files are often used by databases and do not contain any human readable information. The content and the purpose of a .log file will vary according to the application that generates it.

Since so many applications generate .log files it is not practical to attempt to identify the application from the .log file extension. However, if the application can be identified then this will help identify the purpose and role of the .log file.

Can you add to this? Do you know of any applications not already listed which will work with .log files, view .log files or open .log files? Are you able to contribute any additional reference information or file format information about .log files or have you spotted any errors or omissions? If so please let us know by emailing us at feedback@cryer.co.uk - Thank you.
