.lnk file extension

.lnk
Windows shortcut file.

A .lnk file is a shortcut to another file. They are used under Windows to provide a simple means of linking to (or pointing to) another file. This allows a single copy of a file to be referred to from several places. For example a single copy of an application (.exe) file may exist on a Windows PC, but a link to it (complete with icon) may exist on the desktop and/or in the start menu and for one or more separate user accounts.

Shortcut files perform a similar role to Symbolic links on Unix. Unlike Unix where symbolic links are implemented by the file system in Windows .lnk files are separate distinct files.
