.eml

Microsoft Outlook e-mail file. A .eml file can be opened and viewed using Microsoft Outlook or a compatible email client (including Microsoft Outlook Express or Microsoft Mail).

The file can be viewed using notepad, and whilst it is possible to read the content of an email this way it is not a format intended to be easily viewed using a text viewer.
