.ds_store

A Mac OS X file that stores information on the appearance of a folder.

.DS_Store is not a file type, but the name of a file. It is generated by a Mac, specifically a Mac running Max OS X. The .DS_Store file is a hidden file that contains information on how the folder should be viewed. It contains information such as the viewing mode, size and position of window on the desktop. By default (see links below on how to change the default), Max OS X will create a .DS_Store file in every folder viewed, whether it is local to the Mac or across a network.

These files are safe to delete. When the Mac next views the folder it will revert to the default view and the .DS_Store file will be recreated.
