A .dotm file is similar to a .dotx file (in that both can be used as a template from which a new document is created), but unlike .dotx files the .dotm file can also contain macros.
Word 2007 use an XML based file format (cf .docx), also used for this template file, which is fundamentally different (and therefore incompatible) with the format used in earlier versions of Word.
Microsoft Word 2007 also automatically opens normal.dotm which it uses as
a global template when no other template is specified.
