Microsoft Excel Spreadsheet file.

A .xls file is a saved Microsoft Excel spreadsheet file. It contains worksheet data and may also contain charts and macros.

.xls is the format used for a saved Excel spreadsheet for all versions of Microsoft Excel up to and including Excel 2003. Microsoft Excel 2007 and onwards instead used .xlsx files, but are still able to open and use .xls files.
