An image file.

A .xcf file is an image file saved in the the native image format for GIMP - the GNU Image Manipulation Program - which can be used for most image manipulation tasks. The .xcf file format is supported by some other graphics programs but is not one of the more widely used or supported image formats. It supports layering (which is useful if you come to edit an image), with compression.
