Windows (recorded) TV file. Windows Media Center will record TV programs as .wtv files.

The .wtv file contains MPEG-2 video and audio using MPEG-1 Layer II or Dolby Digital AC-3. It supports capture rates of up to 30 mbps. Both audio and video streams are also encrypted, providing copy protection cababilities.

Earlier versions of Windows Media Center (XP and Vista without the TV Pack) used the .dvr-ms file format.

Windows 7 provides a utility to convert .wtv files to the older .dvr-ms file format. Simply right click a .wtv file in Windows Explorer and select "Convert to .dvr-ms Foramt". Microsoft also provide a command line utility "WTVConverter.exe" which does the same transformation.
