.ndx files are known as non-maintained because dBase does not automatically update the index as records are inserted, deleted or updated. To maintain the index the application (or user) had to issue a "REINDEX" command.
.ndx files were widely used on dBase I, dBase II and dBase III, but have been replaced by the user of managed-indexes (.mdx files) introduced with dBase IV.
