MPEG movie file.

MPEG is a compressed video file file. There are various different standards for MPEG compression, with later standards developing as video formats have improved.

MPEG uses lossy compression. Whilst this means that files are much smaller than they might otherwise be, it does sometimes give rise to "artifacts" which are visible in a movie but which were not in the original. However these are not normally noticable unless pointed out or you know what to look for.
