.mdi file extension

.mdi
Microsoft Document Imaging image file.

Also known as an "MDI - Compressed Document Format" file.

This is a file generated as a result of printing to a "Microsoft Office Document Image Writer". This is a virtual printer which is installed with Microsoft Office (2003 and later). Printing to the Microsoft Office Document Image Writer (printer) will generate either a .mdi file or a .tiff file depending on how it is set-up.

The Microsoft Office Document Image Writer (printer) is an optional component of Microsoft Office.

The format of .mdi files is proprietary to Microsoft. However it is known that they contain a compressed image of the printed document and are based on the TIFF files. Microsoft Office should allow .mdi files to be opened and viewed.
