.jrs file extension

.jrs
Reserve transaction log file. jrs files are generated automatically by a database system as part of the transaction logging for Extensible Storage Engine (ESE) files (.edb - such as those used by Windows Update or Microsoft Exchange).

The .jrs (reserve transaction log) files are used when transaction information needs to be written to the transaction log but the disk has run out of space preventing this from happening. .jrs files are created in advance and exist to hold transaction log information in anticipation of the out-of-disk space scenario. For this reason they typically do not contain any meaningful information, as they are only used when disk space is exhausted.

Window Server 2003 and earlier used .log files instead of .jrs files. .jrs files were introduced with Windows Vista.

See the entry for .edb (ESE database file) or ESE (glossary entry) for more information.
