.gdb file extension

.gdb
1. Mapserver sheet database file.

For more information see:

2. Interbase file.
3. ESRI GeoDatabase file.

A .gdb file is an ESRI ArcGIS "geodatabase" file. The file combines spatial data (hence "geo-") with a data repository (hence "-database"), providing a data repository for spatial data.

Whilst ArcGIS treats these as files, the .gdb extension is actually applied to a folder.

The file format of .gdb files is proprietary to ESRI and not public. To access the data contained in a geodatabase (.gdb file) requires the use of one of the ESRI ArcGIS tools. The file format has changed with the release of later ArcGIS versions. In general ArcGIS can read .gis files created with earlier versions of ArcGIS, but cannot read .gis files created with later versions.

For more information see:

Download Filestar to convert .gdb files. Filestar is an universal file converter for Windows that supports over 600 different file types.

Can you add to this? Do you know of any applications not already listed which will work with .gdb files, view .gdb files or open .gdb files? Are you able to contribute any additional reference information or file format information about .gdb files or have you spotted any errors or omissions?
