.etl file extension

.etl
Event Trace Log file.

An Event Trace Log (ETL / .etl) file is a binary file containing detailed information captured during an application session on a machine running Microsoft Windows. ETL files can be used to analyze, report on or tune an application.

ETL files are created by numerous Windows applications. This includes:

  • Windows backup (Windows 2003 and later)
  • Perfmon
  • Microsoft speech server

This list should not be regarded as comprehensive.

To view the content of a .etl file use Windows Event Viewer, and from the "Action" menu select "Open Saved Log ...". Alternatively the Windows command line tool "tracerpt" can be used to convert the .etl file to a .xml file (see links below).

Can you add to this? Do you know of any applications not already listed which will work with .etl files, view .etl files or open .etl files? Are you able to contribute any additional reference information or file format information about .etl files or have you spotted any errors or omissions? If so please let us know by emailing us at feedback@cryer.co.uk - Thank you.
