.dotm file extension

.dotm
Microsoft Word 2007 Template file, which may contain macros. This is an MS-Word document template from which new Word 2007 documents (.docx) can be created.

A .dotm file is similar to a .dotx file (in that both can be used as a template from which a new document is created), but unlike .dotx files the .dotm file can also contain macros.

Word 2007 use an XML based file format (cf .docx), also used for this template file, which is fundamentally different (and therefore incompatible) with the format used in earlier versions of Word.

Microsoft Word 2007 also automatically opens the file "normal.dotm" which it uses as a global template when no other template is specified. This file is loaded from the folder "%APPDATA%\Microsoft\Templates\". If this file is missing then Word will automatically create a new version using default settings.

Word add-ins may add additional template files. For example EndNote adds "Cwyw.dotm" (short for "Cite While You Write"). Templates (and add-ins) can be managed within Word 2007 via: Start → Word Options → Add-Ins

In earlier versions of Microsoft Word this was: Tools → Templates and Add-Ins...
