Configuration file. A text editable file that contains configuration settings for an application.

The file extension .conf is a generic file extension, in that it can be used to refer to denote configuration settings for a wide range of applications. .conf files are more common on applications that originate on Unix than on Windows (where .ini files would commonly be used instead.)

The following is a far from exhaustive list of .conf files:

AWStats configuration file for a web site.
Apache (web server) configuration file.
Name resolution services configuration file.
Name service switch configuration file.
BSD system startup configuration file.
Apache (web server) virtual hosts configuration file.

Can you add to this? Do you know of any applications not already listed which will work with .conf files, view .conf files or open .conf files? Are you able to contribute any additional reference information or file format information about .conf files or have you spotted any errors or omissions? If so please let us know by emailing us at feedback@cryer.co.uk - Thank you.
