A .amv file will have a lower lower resolution, lower frame rate and lower compression than most other file formats (such as .mpg files). However, because of this .amv files have the advantage of a smaller file size and lower processor power requirements. More .amv files can therefore be stored in a low cost device than could .mpg files, and the playback hardware can be cheaper. This makes the .amv file format a popular choice for use with low cost portable players.
It is rumoured that .amv files can be opened and played using Windows Media Player (version 10 and above).
