MS-Windows Troubleshooting

Replication of license information failed because the License Logging Service on server \\XXXX could not be contacted.

Symptom:

The following error appears (regularly, possibly every 15 minutes or so) in the Application event log on the (PDC or BDC) server:

Event ID: 213
Source: LicenseService
Type: Warning
Category: None
Description: Replication of license information failed because the License Logging Service on server \\XXXX could not be contacted.

Where 'XXXX' is the name of another server.

Possible Causes and Remedies:

The license service on the current server regularly tries to synchronise licensing information with the second server 'XXXX', but for some reason is unable to communicate with the License Logging Service on the second server 'XXXX'.

  • The Microsoft Knowledge Base article Q198132 acknowledges this problem (but without addressing a definite cause). It suggests the problem may be due to either being unable to establish a Remote Procedure Call connection or due to basic network communication problems.
  • Check that basic network communication exists between the servers. On the server giving the problem try pinging the second server, i.e:

    ping XXXX

where 'XXXX' is the name of the server given in the error message.

  • Check that the 'License Logging Service' is running on the second server. This service should be running and should normally be set to Automatic startup.

These notes have been tested with Windows NT4.
