Run User Manager for Domains on a workstation

User Manager for Domains (for managing users on an NT4 domain) is not installed as part of NT Workstation, but only for NT Server. However by copying the appropriate files from NT Server it can be run on a workstation.

To allow User Manager for Domains to be run on a workstation:

  1. Copy the following files from ‘C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32’ on the file server into ‘C:\WINNT\SYETEM32’ on the workstation:

    usrmgr.exe
    usrmgr.hlp

  2. Create a shortcut to ‘usrmgr.exe’ in ‘C:\WINNT\Profiles\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Administrative Tools (Common)’ (for Windows 2000 create the shortcut instead in in ‘C:\Documnents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Administrative Tools’) with the following characteristics:

    Name: User Manager for Domains
    Target: %SystemRoot%\system32\USRMGR.EXE
    Start in: %HOMEDRIVE%%HOMEPATH%
    Shortcut key: None
    Run: Normal Window

These notes have been tested with Windows NT4 and W2K.
