How to enable SMTP send logging

To enable logging of out-going SMTP emails:

  1. Start Exchange Management Console
  2. Navigate to:
Microsoft Exchange > Microsoft Exchange On-Premises (server) > Organization Configuration > Hub Transport
  3. Select the "Send Connectors" tab. This tab lists each of your send connectors - typically you may only have one, but some organisations will have more.
  4. Right click on the send connector and select "Properties".
  5. On the "General" tab change the "Protocol logging level" to "Verbose" (the default is "None").

Log files will now be generated on the server in the folder C:\Program Files\Exchange Server\V14\TransportRoles\Logs\ProtocolLog\SmtpSend

When you no longer require logging change the "Protocol logging level" back to "None".

These notes have been tested with Exchange Server 2010.
